Introducing Matchaeologist

Matchaeologist is a British artisan brand specializing in ceremonial quality Japanese matcha green tea. Founded in May 2015 and based in London, its mission is to modernize the ancestral tradition of matcha while making it accessible to as many people as possible.

Its value proposition is based on experience, which combines minimalist aesthetics, tea education and taste excellence. Matchaeologist positions itself as a premium player, distributing its products internationally through three entities (UK, USA, Japan) and targeting tea lovers, baristas, chefs and sommeliers.

The brand offers a range of ceremonial and culinary matcha, accompanied by contemporary accessories (blown glass bowls, bamboo whisks, preparation kits) designed to harmonize traditional values and modern functionality.

Origin & vision

Matchaeologist Ltd has been registered in London since 2015, under company number 09593272. The brand also operates in the United States (Delaware) and Japan (Tokyo), demonstrating its international roots.

Its matcha comes exclusively from the Uji region, located in Kyoto prefecture, recognized worldwide as the ultimate terroir for matcha cultivation. Uji benefits from unique agro-climatic conditions and age-old know-how passed down from generation to generation.

Matchaeologist's vision is based on traceability, authenticity and the enhancement of Japanese terroir. The brand boasts an artisanal approach, with small batch roasting and proprietary techniques aimed at fully expressing the nuances of each harvest.

It is committed to raising public awareness of the benefits of matcha and transmitting the principles of the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu) in a refined and contemporary aesthetic.

Ranges & specialties

Matchaeologist structures its offering around two main categories: ceremonial matcha and culinary matcha, both from renowned Japanese cultivars (Yabukita, Gokou, Uji Hikari, Samidori).

The ceremonial matcha is distinguished by its bright pine green color, its aroma oika (覆い香) refreshing and its pronounced umami flavor. These characteristics are the result of a meticulous process: cultivation in the shade, hand picking of the most tender buds, steaming, air drying and stone grinding.

culinary matcha offers more robust and balanced profiles, designed to enhance lattes, pastries and gourmet preparations. The brand also offers powdered Houjicha, a roasted green tea with a full-bodied, deeply roasted taste.

Matchaeologist also highlights its accessories (matcha-ware): blown glass bowls inspired by clouds, traditional or ergonomic bamboo whisks, chashaku spoons and complete brewing kits.

Quality & certifications

Matchaeologist boasts a strict artisanal approach, with a rigorous selection of tea leaves from Uji, Kyoto. Growing in the shade (two to six weeks before harvest) increases the chlorophyll content and reduces bitterness by preserving theanine, the amino acid responsible for umami.

The leaves are steamed within 24 hours of picking, then denervated, stripped of their stems and ground using a traditional stone mill. This process guarantees an ultra-fine texture and a bright green color.

No European organic certification is mentioned on the official website or in the sources consulted. The vegan, GMO-free and gluten-free labels are also not officially confirmed.

Matchaeologist insists on the traceability of its raw materials and respect for Japanese artisanal methods, but details on certifying bodies and specific standards remain to be clarified.

How to take Matchaeologist food supplements?

Ceremonial matcha is prepared using the traditional usucha (light tea) or koicha (thick tea) method. For an usucha, pour ½ teaspoon (~1g) of matcha into a bowl, add 15ml of water at 70°C, whisk until you obtain a smooth paste, then add 70ml of water and whisk vigorously.

The pronounced umami taste and floral notes are fully revealed by rolling the liquid around the palate. For a matcha latte, mix 1g of matcha with a little hot water, whisk, then add 200ml of heated and frothed milk (vegetable or animal).

Culinary matcha is dosed more generously (1 to 2 teaspoons) to enhance smoothies, pastries, energy balls and savory preparations. Store matcha in a cool, dry place, away from light and humidity; refrigerate after opening to preserve flavor and potency.

In summary

Matchaeologist offers an artisanal matcha from Uji, traced and stone ground, for lovers of authentic and contemporary rituals. With ceremonial and culinary ranges adapted to all uses, the brand combines taste excellence, minimalist aesthetics and education around Japanese tea.
