Kawira review: does cacao husk tea really live up to its promise?
Review in a nutshell

My Kawira review in brief

After several weeks of working Kawira into my routines, I come away fairly positive. The brand is built on a simple but clever idea: infusing cacao husk instead of throwing it away. The result is a pleasant surprise, with a genuine cacao flavour, rounded and comforting. This is a long way from a sweet hot chocolate: here everything stays clear, light and lactose free. For someone who loves cacao notes as much as I do, the promise holds up.

What I appreciate most is the transparency on sourcing. The husks come from Costa Rica, the vanilla from Madagascar, and the blending is done in France in small batches. Being free from added caffeine and under 5 kcal per cup ticks a lot of boxes for daily use. The price of 24,95 euros a pouch is still a real investment, though. That is my main reservation, faced with a range that is still short.

My experience with Kawira: the test

I ordered L'infusion chocolatée to make up my own mind, rather than parroting the brand's pitch. Kawira is intriguing for its concept: turning cacao husk into a hot drink. So I put the ritual to the test, morning and evening, over several weeks, in real conditions. Here is my unfiltered feedback.

🔎 The verdict on taste and texture

First observation: this really is an infusion, not a hot chocolate. The water stays clear and amber, with no thick texture and no milky sensation. The cacao flavour is there, rounded and slightly woody.

The recipe plays on vanilla, annatto and a hint of chilli. The result is a warming cup, subtly spiced and never bitter. The honey rounds it all off without making the drink sweet.

Preparation could not be simpler:

  • hot water and a generous steep to release the aromas
  • drink it hot for the comforting side
  • an iced version works well in summer

For a first try, I would let it steep for a good while. The longer the brew, the more the cacao comes through.

👉 Effectiveness and how it felt

Over time, what stays with me is the ritual side. Kawira is not a drink you rush, it invites you to slow down. That is a real plus for replacing an afternoon coffee.

With no added caffeine, I felt no jitters and no energy crash. The brand highlights the theobromine in cacao, valued for a gentler, more gradual sensation.

In practice, from my own experience:

  • a comforting drink, ideal for a break
  • no digestive heaviness, unlike a milky chocolate
  • a welcome help in spacing out my coffees

I am staying cautious, because an infusion is not a medicine. What we are talking about here is pleasure and comfort, not miracle results.

Who is Kawira?

Kawira is a French brand founded by an artisan chocolate maker. His starting idea is clear: cacao is not just chocolate. It deserves to be rediscovered another way, as an infusion.

The founder has been working with cacao since his teens. His travels, from Guadeloupe to Madagascar, shaped his vision of cacao as a living material, tied to a land and to people.

The brand stands for considered, local production. Blending and packing take place in France, in small batches, to preserve the richness of the ingredients.

📌 The key commitments

  • Making use of cacao husk, often treated as waste
  • Traceable raw materials, from Costa Rica to Madagascar
  • Artisan French production
  • A short recipe, with no artificial flavourings or additives

L'infusion chocolatée vs a classic hot chocolate

CriterionKawiraClassic hot chocolate
Calorie content Under 5 kcal per cup 200 to 350 kcal per cup
Digestion Light at any time of day Heavy, sits on the stomach
Lactose Lactose free Milk based
Sugar Just a touch of honey Often very sweet
Serving Hot or iced Mainly hot

A look at the range

The Kawira range is deliberately short, with two infusions built around cacao husk. That clear choice makes the buying decision easier and saves you getting lost.

Here are the two products available:

  • Le rituel - L'infusion chocolatée: the indulgent alternative to hot chocolate, without milk
  • Le rituel - Alternative au café: the version designed for the moments when you need energy

Both come in a 100 g pouch, around 20 cups. The price is the same, at 24,95 euros per product.

A closer look at the formula: how good is L'infusion chocolatée really?

Let's look at the formula in detail, because that is usually where it all plays out. L'infusion chocolatée is built on a base of cacao bean husks, described as organically farmed.

The recipe is short and easy to read:

  • cacao husks from Costa Rica, the aromatic heart
  • Madagascan vanilla, for roundness
  • annatto, for woody notes
  • chilli, in very small amounts
  • French honey, to soften the whole

One important point: Kawira talks about natural actives in cacao such as magnesium and theobromine, without stating precise doses. This is an infusion for pleasure, not a standardised food supplement.

So we cannot really speak of under-dosing or fairy dusting in the strict sense. That said, the brand would do well to state exact quantities, for even more transparency.

Technical analysis and expert verdict

On quality, Kawira ticks some genuine boxes: a natural recipe, traceable sourcing and French production. The absence of artificial flavourings and additives clearly works in its favour.

The brand also points to flattering references, its infusions having been served in a Michelin-starred restaurant and in a high-end venue. That premium positioning shows in the care taken over the product.

A few objective elements are missing, though: no known Yuka score, no named organic certification body. These fair points still need confirming before we call it flawless.

👉 Our advice

  • Start with a cup in the morning, in place of coffee
  • Let it steep for a good while to bring out the aromas
  • Try the iced version once the weather warms up

Kawira's star product

Le rituel - L'infusion chocolatée

This is the one to go for first. This infusion delivers the pleasure of hot chocolate, without milk or added caffeine, at under 5 kcal per cup. Ideal for discovering the brand's world, it sums up the whole Kawira concept on its own.

🏆 My final verdict: should you buy from Kawira?

My final grade:
7.2
/10

The bottom line: Kawira is a serious brand that delivers on its original promise. You get the flavour of cacao in a light, natural, well thought out infusion, a world away from industrial products.

Price vs quality: at 24,95 euros for 20 cups, you are looking at around 1,25 euro per cup. That is more than a simple herbal tea, but consistent with an artisan product and traceable sourcing. The value for money makes sense above all if you are after an enjoyable alternative to coffee or hot chocolate.

The verdict: yes, Kawira is worth a try, especially for cacao lovers who want to lighten their habits. If you want to make up your own mind, you can discover L'infusion chocolatée on Kawira's official website and enjoy free delivery.
